Apnoea
Apnoea (also known as Apnea) is the suspension of external breathing. During apnoea there is no movement of the muscles of respiration and the air volume of the lungs initially remains unchanged.
Prolonged apnoea leads to severe lack of oxygen in the blood circulation. Permanent brain damage can occur after as little as three minutes and death will inevitably ensue after a few more minutes unless ventilation is restored.
Apnoea is often seen in young babies that stop breathing, where deaths are more commonly known as "cot death".
The Breathing Charity ( NARA - The National Association for the relief of Apnoea) was originally founded in 1984 and has since provided medical breathing monitors, medical equipment support and information to patients and families suffering with breathing difficulties.
